Provided by AGPAccording to a statement from Global Affairs Canada, the measures were unveiled at a high-level meeting of the International Coalition for the Return of Ukrainian Children held in Brussels, where Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand took part.
The statement said the sanctions were imposed under the Special Economic Measures (Russia) Regulations and were introduced in response to what Ottawa described as serious abuses of children’s rights.
Authorities allege that thousands of Ukrainian children have been unlawfully transferred or deported and subjected to “indoctrination and militarization” by Russian authorities, both within Russia and in territories it currently controls in Ukraine.
Canada described the actions as “unacceptable,” stating they represent a major violation of international humanitarian law and a serious breach of human rights standards.
Ottawa said it is now imposing sanctions on an additional 23 individuals and five entities linked to the alleged actions involving Ukrainian children.
With this latest move, Canada has now sanctioned more than 80 individuals and organizations over allegations connected to the treatment of Ukrainian minors since the war began.
