Trump Says US Economic Impact Not a Factor in Iran Negotiations

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump stated that he does not take into account the economic consequences for American citizens when engaging in negotiations with Iran over the ongoing conflict that began in February.

When asked how much consideration he gives to Americans’ financial conditions during the talks, Trump responded, “Not even a little bit.” He added, “The only thing that matters when I am talking about Iran: they can't have a nuclear weapon. I don't think about Americans’ financial situation. I don't think about anybody.”

According to reports citing data from the Iran War Energy Cost Tracker at Brown University’s Watson School of International and Public Affairs, the conflict has contributed to an estimated $38.1 billion increase in energy-related costs for Americans.

The data suggests that most of the additional expenses stem from higher petroleum prices, totaling $20.86 billion, while diesel costs account for $17.2 billion. The tracker also estimates that the average US household has been paying about $290.56 more per month due to rising gasoline and diesel prices.

Tensions in the region have escalated since US and Israeli strikes on Iran on Feb. 28, which triggered retaliatory attacks from Tehran against Israel and US-aligned Gulf states, alongside disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz.

A ceasefire was reached on April 8 through Pakistani mediation, but subsequent negotiations in Islamabad failed to produce a lasting agreement. The truce was later extended indefinitely by Trump amid stalled diplomatic efforts.

Trump has also recently criticized Iran’s latest response to a US proposal aimed at ending the war, calling it “totally unacceptable,” while Iranian parliamentary speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf insisted that there is “no alternative” but to respect the rights outlined in Tehran’s proposal.
