Trump Heads to Beijing for Xi Talks Amid Mideast Tensions

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump is set to visit Beijing this week for a three-day meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, as ongoing conflict in the Middle East and fragile regional ceasefire conditions continue to shape global geopolitics.

The trip, originally planned for late March, marks the first visit by a US president to China since Trump’s first term in 2017. It was delayed following heightened tensions triggered by US-Israeli strikes on Iran and subsequent retaliatory actions, which escalated into broader regional instability before a tenuous ceasefire took hold.

Analysts say the prolonged crisis with Iran has absorbed significant US diplomatic and strategic attention, indirectly benefiting China’s geopolitical positioning.

Experts expect the Beijing meeting to focus less on major breakthroughs and more on stabilizing existing trade and diplomatic arrangements. According to Brookings Institution researcher Jonathan A. Czin, the talks are likely to prioritize maintaining temporary economic understandings rather than resolving deeper structural disputes.

The US delegation is expected to push for increased Chinese imports of American agricultural products such as soybeans, as well as aircraft from Boeing, while broader tensions persist over restrictions on advanced semiconductor exports.

Frictions between Washington and Beijing remain high following a major US arms sale to Taiwan last year, which China strongly opposes and considers a violation of longstanding bilateral agreements.

The Taiwan issue is also expected to be raised during the summit by the Chinese side, according to analysts.

Another key topic anticipated in the discussions is the ongoing instability in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global shipping route that has been affected by regional conflict.

Before the crisis, the waterway was responsible for roughly a quarter of global oil trade, around one-fifth of liquefied natural gas shipments, and a significant share of global fertilizer transport, making it a central focus in global energy security discussions.
