A large number of supporters assembled outside the prison compound under heavy security arrangements. Many wore red clothing, which is widely associated with the Pheu Thai Party, and cheered as Thaksin exited the facility.
Reports indicated that the crowd chanted slogans and waved party flags while he appeared in a white shirt and dark blue trousers, smiling and acknowledging those present as he embraced relatives and supporters.
Earlier, authorities fitted him with an electronic monitoring bracelet as part of the conditions attached to his parole, allowing officials to track his movements during the remainder of his sentence served outside prison.
