Survey Finds Growing Support in Europe for Greater Independence From US

(MENAFN) A large majority of people across the European Union and the United Kingdom believe Europe should become more independent from the United States and pursue its own political direction, according to a new survey cited by reports.

The study found that roughly 73% of respondents within EU member states support the idea of Europe distancing itself from Washington, while a similar sentiment was recorded in the UK, where around two-thirds expressed support for a more autonomous path.

Researchers noted that this trend has strengthened in recent years, with support for greater European independence rising noticeably compared to previous surveys. Trust in the United States as a reliable partner has also reportedly declined among respondents.

The survey was conducted among thousands of participants across all EU countries as well as the UK, with polling designed to reflect demographic distributions including age, gender, and population density.

Calls for increased European strategic autonomy have become more common among political leaders in recent years, particularly in areas such as foreign policy, defense, and economic security. These discussions reportedly intensified following the return of Donald Trump to the US presidency and subsequent disagreements between Washington and European allies on several international issues.

Tensions have included disputes over trade policy, differing approaches to the conflict in Ukraine, and disagreements related to broader geopolitical matters. Additional strain reportedly emerged after military developments involving Iran, which many European governments did not openly support.

The resulting disruptions in global energy markets have also affected Europe significantly, contributing to broader debates within the continent about reducing reliance on US leadership and strengthening independent decision-making capabilities.
