European Union Celebrates Europe Day, Schuman Declaration Anniversary
(MENAFN) The European Union on Saturday commemorated the 76th anniversary of the Schuman Declaration, the historic initiative that laid the foundation for European cooperation and later contributed to the establishment of the EU.
European Council President Antonio Costa said Europe Day represents all Europeans and emphasized the progress achieved through unity and collaboration among member states.
“Today we celebrate our common European project and what we can achieve when we work together,” Costa wrote on the US social media platform X.
“United in diversity, we keep building our shared future of peace, freedom and opportunity,” he added.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also described the occasion as a celebration of European identity, values and citizens.
“Today, we celebrate all that Europe stands for,” von der Leyen wrote on X.
“And we celebrate all of us, the citizens of Europe. Because all together, we are Europe,” she added.
The Schuman Declaration was introduced on May 9, 1950, by former French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman. The proposal called for the creation of a European Coal and Steel Community aimed at deepening cooperation between European nations and reducing the likelihood of future wars after World War II.
The declaration is widely viewed as the first major political step toward the formation of what later became the European Union.
