Provided by AGPEuropean Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated in a post on US social media platform X that the UAE had once again been targeted by what she described as missile and drone attacks originating from Iran. She extended her support to UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Emirati people, and regional partners.
“Today, our partner, the UAE, was once again the target of a vicious missiles and drone attacks originating from Iran. I extend my full solidarity to (President) Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the people of the UAE, and our partners across the Middle East,” von der Leyen wrote.
She strongly condemned the strikes, calling them “unacceptable” and a “clear violation of sovereignty and international law.”
Von der Leyen also emphasized the broader impact of regional instability, noting that “security in the region has direct consequences for Europe,” and reaffirmed continued cooperation with partners aimed at de-escalation and diplomatic solutions.
Early on Monday, a large fire erupted at the Fujairah Oil Industry Zone, an important energy facility on the UAE’s eastern coast, after a drone strike reportedly launched from Iran hit the site.
Tensions across the region have intensified since US and Israeli strikes on Iran on Feb. 28, which prompted Iranian retaliation against Israel and US allies in the Gulf, alongside disruptions including the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
A ceasefire was initially established on April 8 through mediation efforts involving Pakistan, but subsequent talks in Islamabad did not result in a durable agreement. The truce was later extended by US President Donald Trump without a defined end date.
