Germany’s Merz Doubles Down on US-Israel War Criticism
Speaking before reporters at a press conference in the German capital, Merz made no attempt to walk back his previously controversial remarks, in which he accused the United States of lacking an "exit strategy" and suggested Americans had been "humiliated" by Tehran.
"Regarding Iran, yes, I've become disillusioned," Merz stated plainly. "The US and Israel assumed, right from the start, that this problem would be resolved within a few days, and we now have to acknowledge that it isn't. That's why we, from the European side, want to contribute diplomatically to finding a solution."
The Conservative chancellor disclosed that Berlin has already relaunched direct diplomatic channels with Tehran and is actively engaging regional partners to advance initiatives toward ending the conflict. He framed Europe's role not as a passive observer, but as an independent actor with a distinct strategic vision.
"We are coordinating closely with the US side on this, but we also make it clear that we have our own European ideas on how to reach a resolution to the conflict," Merz said, before tempering expectations. "I hope we succeed, but I am not certain."
Merz's remarks signal a notable shift in tone from one of Washington's key NATO allies, underscoring mounting European frustration as the Iran conflict stretches well beyond initial projections with no clear end in sight.
