Thousands Join UK High Court Case Over River Pollution Claims
The legal action, described as the largest environmental pollution lawsuit in the country’s history in terms of both the number of claimants and the geographical scope, targets Avara Foods, a major UK poultry producer, along with Welsh Water. The plaintiffs allege that both companies are responsible for long-term contamination of rivers along the England–Wales border.
Central to the case is the River Wye, once widely known for its natural beauty. In recent years, local residents and environmental campaigners say the river has deteriorated significantly, particularly during summer months when it reportedly turns green, develops strong odors, and becomes coated with slimy algae.
The claim links this deterioration to intensive poultry farming in the surrounding region, where an estimated 24 million chickens are raised at any given time—roughly a quarter of the UK’s total poultry production.
According to the allegations, large volumes of chicken manure spread on agricultural land are being washed into waterways through runoff. This process increases nutrient levels such as phosphorus and nitrogen, which in turn fuel excessive algal blooms during warmer periods, as stated by reports.
The case also raises concerns about sewage discharges, which are presented as an additional contributing factor to the pollution affecting the river systems.
