UK Issues Yellow Weather Warning as Snow, Ice Danger Mounts
The Met Office confirmed the warning came into effect Monday afternoon, initially targeting central and northern Scotland before expanding further. Separate Yellow ice warnings have also been activated across Northern Ireland, large portions of eastern and northern England, and southern Scotland.
Met Office Chief Forecaster Steve Willington attributed the deteriorating conditions to an Arctic air mass settling over the region at the start of the week. "Cool pool of air" dominating the start of the week would bring blustery showers, winter hazards and the risk of disruption," Willington warned.
The dangerous weather arrives as flood risks continue to mount across England. The Environment Agency urged residents in vulnerable communities to stay on high alert, with 71 active flood warnings currently in place — meaning flooding is expected — alongside a further 195 flood alerts where inundation remains a serious possibility. Combined, the 266 alerts underscore the scale of the threat facing communities nationwide.
Authorities have urged the public to check travel conditions before setting out and to monitor updates from the Met Office and Environment Agency as the situation continues to develop.
