UK Court Overturns Ban on Palestine Action

(MENAFN) A co-founder of Palestine Action has succeeded in a legal bid to overturn the group’s designation as a “terrorist organization” in the United Kingdom.

Huda Ammori brought the case before the High Court in London, where judges determined that the government’s decision to proscribe the organization under terrorism laws was unlawful.

Following the ruling, Ammori wrote on X, "The High Court ruled the Palestine Action ban is unlawful as it is disproportionate to free speech and the Home Secretary breached her own policy."

She further stated, "The court ordered the ban be quashed. Details of lifting the ban will be decided and completed at a later date."

In a summary released on its official website, the court concluded that the decision to outlaw the group was “disproportionate,” noting that “the nature and scale of its activities falling within the definition of terrorism had not yet reached the level, scale and persistence to warrant proscription.”

Despite the judgment, the prohibition will temporarily remain in force to permit additional legal proceedings.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood responded by announcing that the government intends to challenge the High Court’s ruling. She maintained that the move to classify the organization had been grounded in a thorough evidentiary review and received parliamentary approval.

Expressing dissatisfaction with the outcome, she wrote on X, "I am disappointed by the Court’s decision and disagree with the notion that banning this terrorist organisation is disproportionate."

The organization had been formally banned in July 2025 under the Terrorism Act after activists entered a Royal Air Force base and spray-painted two aircraft, inflicting an estimated £7 million ($9.44 million) in damage, according to authorities. In the aftermath, hundreds of pro-Palestine demonstrators were detained across the country.

Former Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn welcomed the court’s decision, describing it as an "enormous victory for the Palestinian solidarity movement, for civil liberties and for our common humanity."
