UK Watchdog Launch Investigation into X, xAI Over Grok AI Deepfakes
The investigation follows claims that Grok was used to generate non-consensual sexualized imagery, including images of minors.
"The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has opened formal investigations into X Internet Unlimited Company (XIUC) and X.AI LLC (X.AI) covering their processing of personal data in relation to the Grok artificial intelligence system and its potential to produce harmful sexualised image and video content," the watchdog said.
The ICO emphasized that the investigation will focus on whether personal data has been handled lawfully, fairly, and transparently, and whether adequate safeguards were built into Grok to prevent the creation of harmful manipulated images using personal data.
"Where those safeguards fail, individuals lose control of their personal data in ways that expose them to serious harm," the statement added.
The office stressed that evaluating these risks is central to its mission of protecting people’s rights and ensuring organizations are accountable when designing and deploying AI technologies.
Referring to earlier action, the ICO noted that it had previously contacted XIUC and X.AI on January 7 to request urgent information about the reports.
William Malcolm, executive director of regulatory risk & innovation at the ICO, said the reports surrounding Grok raise "deeply troubling questions" about how personal data has been used to generate intimate or sexualized images without knowledge or consent.
