Yemen’s Riyan Airport Resumes Operations

(MENAFN) Yemen's Riyan International Airport has returned to service following years of dormancy, with domestic air travel resuming Sunday in the eastern Hadhramaut province, according to state media reports.

The facility in Mukalla—a coastal city—processed its inaugural flight since rehabilitation, with an aircraft touching down from Aden International Airport, Yemen's state-run television channel confirmed. The milestone flight officially restores operations at the strategically positioned aviation hub.

Enhanced provincial connectivity now appears within reach for residents, as the airport's activation signals aviation infrastructure gradually returning online at the critical transport gateway.

Domestic service has commenced while preparations advance for international route launches, state media indicated. Yemen's Civil Aviation Authority is orchestrating a comprehensive airport rehabilitation initiative designed to return facilities to complete operational capability nationwide.

Officials project the revitalized air traffic will catalyze both commercial activity and humanitarian logistics while bolstering Hadhramaut's standing as a vital economic and supply chain center.

Yemen's General Authority of Civil Aviation and Meteorology announced Friday that Riyan Airport would resume Sunday operations following technical upgrades focused on elevating safety protocols and service standards.

Since 2015, the airport has functioned sporadically due to Yemen's extended conflict, which crippled air transportation infrastructure throughout significant portions of the nation, local media sources noted.

Presidential Leadership Council member and Hadhramaut Governor Ahmed Salem al-Khanbashi recently stated that Riyan and Seiyun airports had previously been stripped of equipment during periods of instability.

Yemeni government forces recaptured the eastern provinces of Hadhramaut and Al-Mahra from fighters of the Southern Transitional Council (STC) early this month. The two regions, which account for nearly half of Yemen's territory, were seized by STC fighters last month.
