German lawmaker says Europe needs nukes amid Trump’s Greenland push

(MENAFN) A German lawmaker has called for the country to develop nuclear weapons, arguing that US ambitions over Greenland highlight Europe’s inability to fully rely on American protection, according to reports.

Kay Gottschalk, parliamentary finance policy spokesman for the Alternative for Germany (AfD), said the postwar approach of “outsourcing Europe’s defense” to Washington has “dissolved into thin air” and claimed Trump’s stance on Greenland demonstrates that “there are no friendships between states, only interests.”

“And the interests of the United States are fundamentally different from ours and from Europe’s. Precisely for this reason, we must once again take the defense and security of Europe into our own hands… Germany needs nuclear weapons,” Gottschalk wrote on X on Sunday.

The MP further urged Germany and other EU countries to establish “the strongest military” equipped with “the best weapons.” He noted the challenge of forging a unified European defense, stating, “It will be difficult to forge a common defense alliance within the European states. The political differences are great, the rifts of the past deep and wide. But it is the only way away from dependence toward sovereignty.”

Trump has repeatedly expressed his desire to gain control over Greenland, an autonomous territory within Denmark, citing its strategic value in the Arctic and refusing to rule out the use of force. European leaders have rejected any alteration to Greenland’s status, creating significant tensions between the US and NATO allies.
