NATO members push back against Trump’s tariff threats
Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the UK, the Netherlands, and Finland reaffirmed their stance and pledged a “united and coordinated” response after Trump announced plans to impose a 10% levy on imports from the eight countries due to their opposition to his efforts to acquire the Danish autonomous territory of Greenland.
The joint declaration stated, “Tariff threats undermine transatlantic relations and risk a dangerous downward spiral. We will continue to stand united and coordinated in our response. We are committed to upholding our sovereignty,” echoing similar comments made by senior EU officials in Brussels the previous day.
The NATO nations emphasized their willingness to engage in dialogue with Washington, provided discussions respect “the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity.”
Earlier, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson described Trump’s move as “blackmail,” while French President Emmanuel Macron called the threats “unacceptable.”
Trump has pursued Greenland under US control since his first term, citing alleged security risks from Chinese and Russian influence in the Arctic, claims dismissed by both Moscow and Beijing. He has also repeatedly mocked Denmark’s military presence on the island, joking that Greenland is defended by only “two dog sleds,” according to reports.
