Pakistan-Afghanistan Border Negotiations Ends in Deadlock

(MENAFN) Diplomatic efforts to defuse escalating tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan have crumbled without producing a resolution, Islamabad officials confirmed.

The negotiations, held in Türkiye, represented a second attempt at de-escalation following initial discussions in Doha that yielded a temporary ceasefire on October 19. That truce came after brutal border clashes in which the Taliban claimed to have eliminated 58 Pakistani troops, while Islamabad announced the capture of 19 Afghan frontier positions.

Pakistani Information Minister Attaullah Tarar expressed frustration on X, condemning the Afghan negotiating team for employing "deflection and ruses." "The dialogue thus failed to produce any workable solution," he said.

Security sources from Pakistan revealed that Monday's marathon negotiations stretched nearly 18 hours before reaching an impasse. Pakistani authorities alleged that Kabul's representatives reversed their position on a critical Islamabad demand: decisive measures against the banned militant organization Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). A source quoted by Al Jazeera stated that the Afghan team's instructions from Kabul were hindering progress in the negotiations.

During Sunday's mediation involving representatives from Qatar and Türkiye, Afghanistan presented a draft proposal to Pakistani negotiators demanding "non-violation of Afghanistan's territory and airspace" while committing to block Pakistani territory from being exploited by Taliban adversaries, sources told Afghanistan International.
