South Korea Rolls Out AI-Powered Taxis Ahead of APEC Summit
The historic southeastern city of Gyeongju will host the two-day summit, which takes place from Friday through Saturday. This marks only the second occasion in 20 years that South Korea has welcomed leaders and representatives from the 21 APEC member economies.
The summit arrives as US tariffs continue to shake global supply chains, pushing countries including China, South Korea, and Japan to negotiate separate trade agreements with Washington.
Security around the Gyeongju Hwabaek International Convention Center, the summit’s main venue, is tight, with numerous police vehicles patrolling surrounding roads. In addition, approximately 250 South Korean volunteers have been deployed to major event venues, hotels accommodating leaders and tourists, and popular city attractions.
Gyeongju city officials have also introduced an AI-powered translation and interpretation system across roughly 1,000 taxis in the area to assist international visitors.
On the sidelines of the summit, US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping are scheduled to meet on Thursday. This will mark Trump’s first visit to South Korea since 2019 and Xi’s first since 2014, and will also be the first time both leaders are hosted as state guests outside the capital, Seoul.
The agenda is expected to cover tariffs, trade, rare earths, and soybeans, highlighting the ongoing economic tension between the world’s two largest economies.
Earlier this week, the US and China held two days of trade negotiations in Malaysia. The US delegation described the outcome as reaching a “very substantial framework” on trade ties, while the Chinese side termed it a “preliminary consensus.”
