EU passenger car market expands driven by electric vehicles
Among the EU’s largest markets, Spain led the growth with a 16.4% increase, followed by Germany at 12.8% and Italy at 4.2%.
Electric vehicles continued to fuel the market expansion. Battery-electric vehicle (BEV) sales jumped 20% year-on-year in September, totaling 167,586 units and representing 18.9% of overall new car registrations. Spain saw the largest surge in BEV sales at 59.7%, while Germany and France recorded gains of 31.9% and 11.2%, respectively.
Hybrid-electric vehicles (HEVs) strengthened their presence, accounting for 34.7% of the EU market in September, with registrations rising 15.9% to 308,037 units. Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) also experienced significant growth, with sales up 65.4% to 91,148 units.
By contrast, traditional internal combustion engine cars continued to decline. Petrol car registrations fell 7.8%, reducing their market share to 24.9%, while diesel cars dropped 14.3%, holding just 8.1% of the market. Most EU countries recorded double-digit decreases for conventional vehicles.
