AU Chair Endorses UN Resolution to Enhance Cooperation with Africa
During its 79th session, the UN General Assembly approved the resolution on deepening UN-AU cooperation, underlining that such efforts will advance the core principles of both the UN Charter and the AU's Constitutive Act.
In a statement issued on Saturday, Youssouf hailed the resolution as a significant affirmation of Africa's leadership and the crucial partnership between the UN and AU in advancing peace, security, and sustainable development. He emphasized the shared commitment to turning this cooperation into tangible actions that benefit Africa's people while enhancing global stability.
A central aspect of the resolution was the acknowledgment of the AU's Agenda 2063, a 50-year blueprint aimed at building a prosperous, integrated, and peaceful Africa driven by its citizens. The resolution also highlighted the increasing role of the continent on the international stage.
Youssouf reaffirmed the AU’s "unwavering commitment to working hand-in-hand with the UN" to fulfill both Agenda 2063 and the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
The resolution also called for strengthened measures to improve the efficiency and impact of UN-AU cooperation, specifically in tackling peace and security challenges, overcoming development barriers, and advancing human rights in Africa.
