U.S. Secretary of State Rubio Lands in Israel for Key Talks
Rubio is slated to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during his visit.
Ahead of his arrival, Rubio posted on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), stating: "On my way to Jerusalem. My focus will be on securing the return of hostages, finding ways to make sure humanitarian aid reaches civilians, and addressing the threat posed by Hamas."
On Tuesday, Israel launched an attack on a residential compound in Doha, killing five Hamas members and a Qatari security officer. The strike was part of Israel's ongoing efforts to weaken Hamas leadership abroad.
Qatar, along with Egypt and the US, plays a key role in mediating indirect negotiations between Israel and Hamas, focused on a potential prisoner-hostage swap and a ceasefire agreement in Gaza. The ongoing Israeli military operation in Gaza, which escalated after Hamas's attacks on Israel on October 7, 2023, has resulted in more than 64,000 Palestinian deaths and widespread devastation in the enclave.
Currently, Israel estimates that 48 of its nationals remain captive in Gaza, with 20 of them still alive. Meanwhile, over 10,000 Palestinians are incarcerated in Israel, reportedly enduring severe conditions, including torture, starvation, and lack of medical care.
