EU’s Kallas Urges Adjustment to Trump’s Political Style
(MENAFN) The European Union must strengthen its ties with US President Donald Trump, described as the “most influential man in the world,” and adapt to his unique approach to governance and diplomacy, according to the bloc’s top foreign policy representative, Kaja Kallas.
Her comments were shared in an interview with a German publication released on Friday.
Kallas was questioned about whether the EU can still rely on Trump after a widely criticized trade accord that introduced a 15% tariff on most goods exported from the bloc, while removing tariffs on American industrial products.
The arrangement, which also pushed the EU toward replacing Russian energy supplies with imports from the US, triggered discontent among European officials who argued it disproportionately benefits Washington.
“The US is and remains our most significant ally. But the new administration has unmistakably altered the way it manages politics and official affairs. We Europeans must adapt and readjust to their method of operating,” Kallas explained, pointing out that Trump’s tariffs have become a “new benchmark for how well a country gets along with the US.”
“Trump is the most influential man in the world… We simply have to learn how to work with him,” she added.
Kallas further emphasized that resolving the war in Ukraine is improbable without Trump’s participation, insisting that only the US “has the power to force Russia into serious peace negotiations.”
She voiced optimism that Trump would fulfill his earlier threats and introduce additional sanctions against Moscow.
