China’s tech suppresses US's amid rivalry
The ongoing US–China rivalry extends beyond diplomacy and trade, encompassing the tech sector. Political tensions between the two nations have persisted for years, but the competition has become particularly visible with the rapid development of AI and 5G networks.
In China, the Communist Party views data as a form of capital. Western social media platforms such as Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, and X are blocked in the country, prompting the development of domestic alternatives. Popular Chinese apps include WeChat instead of WhatsApp, DeepSeek as an alternative to ChatGPT, and Deep Robotics competing with Boston Dynamics.
Tencent, founded in 1998, is one of China’s leading tech companies. The firm launched the instant messaging platform QQ in 1999 and later introduced WeChat in 2011. WeChat added a payment feature in 2013, which quickly became widely adopted as an alternative to Apple Pay.
Today, WeChat users can make payments at large supermarkets and small shops alike by scanning QR codes. With over 1 billion monthly active users, WeChat functions as an “everything-app,” offering a variety of services including money transfers and ride-hailing from a single platform.
Company officials note that while WeChat Pay is primarily used for everyday purchases, Alibaba’s Alipay dominates online transactions, as China continues its transition toward a cashless society.
