Israel murders ex-Palestinian basketball player while seeking food

(MENAFN) A former Palestinian basketball player was killed by Israeli gunfire while trying to find food in the Gaza Strip, local media reported late Tuesday.

Mohammed Shaalan, 40, a leading figure on the Palestinian national basketball team, was shot in Khan Younis in southern Gaza, according to the state news agency Wafa. Shaalan had been searching for food and medicine for his daughter, Maryam, who suffers from kidney failure and severe blood poisoning.

Known by the nickname “The Earthquake,” Shaalan had competed for multiple local teams as well as the national squad.

Israel has faced international criticism recently after killing another former Palestinian player, Suleiman al-Obeid, dubbed the “Palestinian Pelé,” while he waited for aid near a distribution point in southern Gaza.
