Russia-India Trade Soars to All-Time High
Speaking at a joint press briefing in Moscow with Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, Lavrov revealed that bilateral trade has reached historic highs. He also indicated the Kremlin is weighing increased oil exports to India, its strategic partner in the East.
Lavrov’s statement comes as tensions rise over India’s energy cooperation with Russia. The United States recently threatened to slap an additional 25% tariff on Indian goods, a move widely seen as retaliation for continued purchases of Russian oil.
On August 7, just one day after the White House unveiled its punitive measures, Indian state-run refineries temporarily halted imports of Russian crude. However, the freeze was short-lived; oil flows resumed on Wednesday, with several government-backed Indian firms securing September delivery contracts from Russian suppliers.
Turning to the war in Ukraine, Lavrov informed Jaishankar about recent diplomatic interactions between Moscow and Washington. He noted that Russia is evaluating how to move forward with those discussions in a way that addresses the security concerns of all involved parties.
He also accused Ukraine’s leadership of resisting efforts to resolve the conflict, suggesting their stance runs counter to initiatives for peace reportedly advanced by U.S. President Donald Trump.
The meeting underscored both countries' resolve to fortify bilateral relations, even as geopolitical tensions with the West continue to mount.
