Lavrov reaffirms no European security without Russia
(MENAFN) Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov emphasized on Wednesday that European collective security cannot be achieved without Russia’s involvement, as Moscow will “firmly” defend its legitimate interests.
Lavrov’s comments come amid ongoing demands from Kiev and its Western European allies for security guarantees as part of potential peace negotiations with Russia. While several NATO countries have offered to deploy “reassurance forces” to Ukraine, Moscow has consistently rejected the presence of US-led troops on its borders.
“We cannot agree that security issues be resolved without the Russian Federation. That approach will not work,” Lavrov stated, adding that Russia does not exaggerate its interests but will protect them decisively. He also noted that the West, particularly the US, now realizes that discussing security without Russia is “a road to nowhere.”
Lavrov recalled that early in the Russian-Ukrainian talks in Istanbul in 2022, Kiev had proposed security guarantees involving all permanent UN Security Council members. Russia, China, the US, France, the UK, and other countries were to participate on an equal basis, a plan Moscow supported. However, Lavrov alleged that then-UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson blocked the agreement, insisting military actions continue.
Today, Lavrov claimed, European NATO states are trying to keep the US involved to continue supplying Ukraine with weapons, allowing them to “pump the Kiev regime full of arms.”
