Netanyahu claims Macron is encouraging anti-Semitism

(MENAFN) Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has accused French President Emmanuel Macron of fueling anti-Semitism by advancing France’s recognition of a Palestinian state. The French presidency rejected the charge, calling it “manipulation” and vowing to respond.

In a letter published by AFP on Tuesday, Netanyahu claimed anti-Semitism in France “surged” following Macron’s announcement last month. “Your call for a Palestinian state pours fuel on this anti-Semitic fire,” he wrote. “It rewards Hamas terror, hardens their refusal to release hostages, emboldens threats against French Jews, and encourages Jew-hatred in your streets.”

Netanyahu urged Macron to confront anti-Semitism directly and set a deadline of September 23 — the Jewish New Year — to act decisively.

The Elysee Palace dismissed the accusation as “erroneous” and stressed that France “protects and will always protect its Jewish citizens.” Macron’s office said the remarks amounted to conflation that “will not go unanswered.”

On Wednesday, Macron criticized Israel’s planned operation to seize Gaza City, warning on X that it would “lead to disaster for both peoples and risk plunging the region into endless war.” He renewed calls for a permanent ceasefire, hostage releases, and expanded humanitarian access.

Israel continues to face growing international condemnation over the war in Gaza, which has killed more than 62,000 Palestinians, according to the enclave’s Health Ministry. The UN has warned that Israeli restrictions have reduced aid deliveries to levels “far below” what is needed to prevent mass starvation, though Israel maintains Hamas is to blame for the disruptions.
