Trump’s envoy bullies skeptics telling them to sit in corner
(MENAFN) Trump’s special envoy Keith Kellogg has hailed the Alaska summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin as a pivotal step toward peace in Ukraine, while bluntly telling skeptics to “shut up.”
The two leaders met in Anchorage last week, expressing optimism that progress had been made toward a potential peace deal.
“We’re living in a really historic time,” Kellogg said on Wednesday. He added: “To the critics, I’d probably like to just say, oh, shut up and go sit in the corner.”
According to Kellogg, Trump has taken more direct action on the Ukraine war than former President Joe Biden, who “never even talked to Putin.” Unlike the previous administration, which pledged open-ended military support for Kyiv “as long as it takes,” Kellogg said Trump is relying on personal diplomacy and direct negotiations to find a solution.
Russian officials, including Putin himself, have praised Trump’s “sincere” attempts to achieve peace.
Friday’s meeting marked the first face-to-face encounter between Trump and Putin since 2019. Both leaders described their talks as constructive and cordial.
Earlier this week, Trump also met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, several European leaders, and the heads of NATO and the European Commission. During those discussions, Trump ruled out Ukraine’s entry into NATO and pushed for direct negotiations between Zelensky and Putin.
Trump later spoke with Putin by phone to update him on those meetings. Russian officials said the call lasted about 40 minutes, with both sides agreeing to keep discussions going.
On Wednesday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov confirmed Moscow’s readiness to raise the level of its delegation for potential peace talks with Ukraine—an idea he said Putin put forward after speaking with Trump.
