UK reflects on twentieth anniversary of London bombing

(MENAFN) The United Kingdom on Monday observed the 20th anniversary of the 2005 London bombings with commemorations, reflection, and renewed discussions on national security and counterterrorism efforts.

Wreaths were laid at the Hyde Park memorial at 8:50 a.m. (0750 GMT), the exact moment the first explosion occurred. Prime Minister Keir Starmer and London Mayor Sadiq Khan took part in the ceremony, while King Charles III paid tribute to the acts of bravery and kindness shown on that tragic day.

According to experts, the threat of terrorism remains, with growing concern about individuals becoming radicalized through the internet. A former counterterrorism analyst, Naomi Davis-Crane, emphasized the persistent danger posed by isolated attackers influenced by extremist material online. She underlined the importance of staying alert, improving assistance for victims, and tightening the regulation of harmful content on social media platforms.
"There is a melancholy, and just a question as to when it will happen again -- because it will happen again," she stated.

The attacks on July 7, 2005, were carried out by four British citizens who were reportedly influenced by al-Qaeda's ideology. Since then, newer incidents—such as the 2017 Manchester Arena bombing and the 2021 explosion near Liverpool Women’s Hospital—have shown a shift toward attackers operating alone and becoming radicalized through digital platforms.

One such example is the case of Axel Rudakubana, a Southport resident involved in a murder case, which some believe highlights the increasing role of online radicalization.
