Provided by AGPSpeaking in an interview with Belgian broadcaster on Friday, Borrell said the bloc’s inability to agree on key issues has weakened its international influence, echoing concerns previously raised by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
Von der Leyen has repeatedly called for reforms that would reduce individual member states’ veto powers and shift foreign policy and defense decisions toward qualified majority voting.
Borrell argued that the EU’s current structure is no longer suited to the pace of global events, saying the bloc “was not designed for the world in which we live today.”
He added that the EU’s decision-making rules are “not compatible with the acceleration of history,” explaining that the requirement for unanimous agreement on fast-moving international developments makes consensus difficult to achieve.
As a result, he said, the bloc “almost never” reaches agreement on major issues, leaving it “not very relevant to international politics,” according to reports.
